Aric Klar, founder of Metro Detroit's Toyology Toys, opens a Quality Roots recreational marijuana dispensary in Hamtramck on January 7. This marks his latest venture into cannabis retail, applying lessons from toys to a tightly regulated industry. The move arrives amid lingering community skepticism toward such businesses in the city.
From Playthings to Provisions
Klar launched Toyology Toys in West Bloomfield in 2011, building it into a multi-location chain across Metro Detroit. He now extends that model to Quality Roots, starting with a Battle Creek dispensary and pushing into the region. "We pride ourselves, just like in our toy business, on our selection of goods. Not just in providing a variety of products but in providing the right variety," Klar states. This approach emphasizes curated offerings over sheer volume, a strategy that bridges disparate retail worlds.
Navigating Hamtramck's Mixed Reception
Hamtramck permits retail dispensaries because it never enacted an ordinance to ban them after Michigan legalized recreational marijuana in 2018. The city's first such outlet opened in November 2020, prompting media-covered backlash from residents concerned about neighborhood impacts. Klar acknowledges the challenge: "We’re excited to show Hamtramck and the surrounding communities the value of having this kind of retail in the city. We’ll be working daily to earn everybody’s trust so that we can become a household name." The new site at 2024 Caniff Street opens Thursday, testing whether professional retail standards can shift local views.
Retail Parallels in a Regulated Market
Cannabis retail demands compliance with state licensing, product testing, and age verification, contrasting with toy sales but sharing customer service demands. Klar's expansion reflects broader trends in Michigan, where dispensaries proliferated after legalization, numbering over 700 statewide by recent counts. Success hinges on building trust through consistent quality, as Klar notes: "It all comes in time. It’s not going to happen overnight." His cross-industry experience positions Quality Roots to differentiate via superior selection and service, potentially easing community tensions over time.
